“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”
I Thessalonians 5:11
My boys are CRAZY about golf. “Dad, can we go to the course?” “Dad, can we practice putting?” “Dad, do you think I can beat you yet?” The golf chatter constantly fills the airwaves of our home. Why? Perhaps because I love golf so much? I have only been on the golf course five times in my life, and it wasn’t fun for anyone :). Then obviously its because they have a natural talent for it and it comes easy … nope, sadly both my boys have their dad’s ability. So why? Why are the CRAZY to learn something they aren’t good at, something they haven’t even been exposed to yet, something that is more of a sports conversion than anything else? Why are my kids crazy about golf? Two words … Coach Gerry!
Coach Gerry is serious about making disciples and his primary tool is this, Encourage one another and build each other up. The guy is RELENTLESS in his encouragement. So much so that my two, non talented, young converts to golf can hardly think of anything else.
As you might suspect Gerry can be so encouraging because his standards are very low. He looked my two little men in the eye and said, “Do you know what our goal is? To get you a college scholarship through golf.” I almost fell out of my chair! What? My kids can’t even swing, just let them have fun, don’t squash the joy before they even pick up a club. Then he proceeded. You know how we behave in this program? With integrity, character, commitment, and encouragement. If you miss practice you will be removed from the program. Are you kidding me? Standards like that NO one can reach … “unless you will encourage each other and build each other up.”
My boys know Coach Gerry’s standards and they are lofty. However, his instant encouragement screams to
the soul of two young men, “I know you can do all of this and more!” Both boys were talking about getting a scholarship to college and they believe they will. I was still skeptical. I poked my head in their room and asked, “Why do you think you will both get scholarships?” Jaxon lifted up his head and said, “Cause coach Gerry believes in us.”
You my friend, can lead others into a growing relationship with Jesus. In fact you are already doing it! Just follow Coach Gerry and apply the apostle Paul’s words, “So, encourage one another and build each other up.” May the kingdom advance in your home, your job, your school, and your community through you, as you encourage and build up.
Expecting God sized things,
